Titans, Hornets win region golf titles

Olympia’s boys golf team completed its first sweep of Metro, district and region tournament titles in seven years on Monday when it shot 311 in windy conditions to win the Class 3A, Region 3 championship at Cleveland Heights Country Club in Lakeland.

Jackson Burtram posted a 76 to lead a balanced Titans effort.

Bishop Moore won the 2A-4 tournament by 22 strokes at Walkabout Country Club in Mims to punch its ticket to next week’s state tournament at Mission Inn and Resort in Howey.

Medalist Grant Drogosch of West Orange (71) and Jonathan Yaun (74) of Lake Minneola finished first and tied for second, respectively, and both join Olympia as qualifiers for the 3A state tournament Nov. 3-4.

National notice

The undefeated Trinity Prep boys cross country team is No. 25 in the new Saucony Flo50 national rankings. The Saints, favorites to win their third consecutive Class 2A state championship, are the only Florida boys or girls team ranked in the top 25.

Trinity Prep opens the postseason as host for the 2A, District 8 meet on Thursday, starting at 5:30 p.m.

Lake Brantley middle distance runner Sinclaire Johnson committed to Oklahoma State. The senior, who has been slowed by an injury in the current cross country season, has won two state titles in the 800-meter run and another in the 1,600.

Lacrosse move

The state lacrosse finals, which were played at IMG Academy in Bradenton in 2014 and 2015, will move to Palm Beach County next season. Jupiter High School will host the semifinals and finals on April, 29-30, 2016. West Orange hosted state lacrosse five times (2008-11 and 2013) after the Florida High School Athletic Association first created official state playoffs.
