Murray, defense give Eagles win

- Tribune news services

DeMarco Murray ran for 109 yards and a touchdown, Nolan Carroll returned one of Eli Manning’s two picks for a score and the Eagles beat the Giants 27-7 on Monday night in Philadelphia.

Sam Bradford threw for 280 yards and a 32-yard TD pass to Riley Cooper but had three interceptions.

The Eagles (3-3) have won two straight to move from last place in the NFC East into a tie for first with the Giants (3-3). The teams meet again in Week 17.

Neither team looked sharp in front of a primetime audience. They combined for seven turnovers and 21 penalties.

MCL sprain for Mariota:

Titans rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota has a sprained left MCL, and the team will re-evaluate the injury Tuesday to see to what extent he can practice Wednesday and prepare for Sunday’s game against the Falcons.

Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt said Monday that Mariota is moving around well but that he’ll divide reps as needed with backup Zach Mettenberger.

ESPN reported the MRI revealed a Grade 2 MCL sprain, which often requires three to four weeks of recovery time.

Mariota’s knee was injured when he was hit low by Olivier Vernon during the Dolphins’ 38-10 win Sunday in Nashville. The league reportedly is reviewing the hit.

Mariota, the 2014 Heisman Trophy winner and No. 2 overall pick in the draft, didn’t miss a play against the Dolphins until he was pulled late, but he wore a knee brace after suffering the injury in the second quarter. He said after the game that he didn’t consider the hit to be malicious and that Vernon apologized to him.

Whisenhunt and Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan complained about the hit after the game, and the coach reiterated Monday that “it was low and late.”

Hoyer the guy: The Texans have flip-flopped between Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett throughout the early part of this season.

That indecision at quarterback appears to be over now after Hoyer’s strong performance in team’s 31-20 win over the Jaguars on Sunday.

“He’s our quarterback,” coach Bill O’Brien said. “We’re going to stick with him. He’s playing really well. He’s playing at a high level, and we’ve got a lot of confidence in him.”
