Marshall stays connected to team

- Brendan Sonnone

TALLAHASSEE — FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said losing safety Trey Marshall for the regular season with a biceps injury was tough because of how much extra time he spent preparing for each game.

“This guy was doing everything right to play well,” Fisher said. “It wasn’t just about ability. It wasn’t just about instincts. It was putting the preparation in, the hard work, the practice, the conditioning. Everything he had to do to be a good football player, and he was doing it.”

Marshall was back in team meetings Monday, acting as if he were getting ready to play Georgia Tech Saturday.

“A lot of times when players are hurt, they don’t come to the meetings. He was the first one at the meeting, still engaged,” cornerback Marquez White said. “. . . He’s really important to our team.” Marshall could be back for a bowl game, Fisher said. FSU running back Dalvin Cook said he feels that horse-collar penalties should’ve been called on several occasions this season.

Defenders have brought the sophomore down by the inside collar area of his shoulder pads at least twice this season, with the most recent incident coming in the fourth quarter against Louisville. Horse-collar tackles are banned by the NCAA.

“I feel like it should be reviewable sometimes because it can cause a severe injury to some people,” Cook said. “I feel like they missed [it] a couple times.”

Next game: No. 9 FSU at Georgia Tech, 7 p.m. Saturday, ESPN2
