Herman touts parity in American

- Shannon Green

When Tom Herman left his post as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator to lead a Houston football team that fired its previous head coach after an 8-5 finish, he knew he was taking on a challenge.

Herman wasn’t walking into a program that needed rebuilding. He walked into a program looking to win championships immediately.

Houston, like the American Athletic Conference, wants to rise in the national spotlight. And, so far, both are getting the job done.

The No. 21 Cougars are one of three undefeated teams in the league, joining No. 22 Temple and No. 18 Memphis.

“I would hope that the nation is taking some notice in what this conference is and the fact that . . . each and very week there’s no gimmes in this league,” Herman said.

Right now, the UCF football team is at the bottom and Herman isn’t taking that lightly. Much like the Knights, his team is experiencing its own bout with injuries.

Starting left tackle Zach Johnson and right guard Josh Thomas suffered season-ending injuries. The team also lost left guard Ben Dew due to a foot injury.

Herman said his offensive staff has done a good job being selective in what they are asking players to do with the lack of depth in that position.

“This coming week against Central Florida, although their record may say otherwise, [is a] very talented team,” Herman said.
