Get in the spirit with Clive Barker

It’s just over a week until Halloween, the night when spirits roam the Earth, so there are a couple of artsy happenings scheduled in anticipation of the Oct. 31 hauntings. For those who prefer their art a little more traditional and academic, there are events for you, too.

The most noteworthy of the ghoulish celebrations is at the appropriately named Gods & Monsters in the Artegon Marketplace, 5250 International Drive, Orlando. The store in the former Festival Bay is open all day, but after the sun goes down Saturday, there will be music, live performances, beer, cider, mead, wine and lots of art. Clive Barker, creator of scream-inducing movies such as “Hellraiser,” will share his paintings and several local artists will show their more macabre works. The special event runs from 8 p.m.-2 a.m. and no one under 18 will be admitted after 10 p.m. If you arrive after the mall closes, there is an outside entrance behind Sheplers. Admission is free. Call 407-529-4913 for details.

Downtown Sanford’s Halloweenthemed art walk is today, 6-9 p.m. There are several galleries participating, artists

and vendors on the sidewalk and other activities all along and near First Street. Start at the Historic Sanford Welcome Center, 230 E. First St., where you can vote on the best works in a special art show and learn more about the walk.

Chad Pollpeter and Yuri Maiorov are two outstanding artists who live and work in Central Florida. See them Saturday, 6-11 p.m., at a reception hosted by Fine Framing and Art, 5699 S. Orange Ave., Orlando. Both artists tend to lean to the surreal with emotion-invoking images. Pollpeter paints on canvas and Maiorov takes some of the most unusual and striking photography that you may ever see. Many of his images use characters from Cirque du Soleil, where Yuri is the famous red-silk flying man. Details: 407-850-2200.
