Former interim UCF coach Barrett goes to Dolphins,
Former UCF interim head football coach Danny Barrett has landed a new job close to home.
Barrett, a Boynton Beach native, was named the Miami Dolphins’ new running backs coach.
Barrett is a former Canadian Football League standout and head coach. He spent the past five seasons as an assistant coach at UCF.
When George O’Leary stepped down as the team’s head coach in the middle of the 2015 season, Barrett replaced him as the Knights’ interim coach. Amid a slew of injuries and adversity, UCF finished the season with an 0-12 record.
During Barrett’s 15-year professional playing career, he played in163 regular-season CFL games for Calgary, Toronto, British Columbia and Ottawa. The former University of Cincinnati standout threw for 23,419 yards and 133 touchdowns during his career.
He became a coach in the CFL in 1997, primarily mentoring quarterbacks and tailbacks, and quickly rose up the ranks. He became head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2000.
Barrett coached the Roughriders in more regular-season games than any other coach in franchise history, but he produced just one winning season in his seven years in charge. His record as a head coach was 57-58-1.
After leaving the CFL, Barrett coached quarter- backs at the University of Buffalo for two seasons before joining O’Leary’s staff in 2011.
This will be Barrett’s first season as an assistant coach in the NFL. He’ll be replacing Jeff Nixon, who coached Miami’s tailbacks since the 2011 season.
According to ESPN, the Dolphins are also expected to hire former Broncos guard Chris Kuper as the team’s offensive qualitycontrol coach. Kuper spent eight seasons in the NFL, starting 79 games for Denver
New Dolphins coach Adam Gase is expected to complete his coaching staff next week, and that staff will likely include a few holdovers from Joe Philbin’s time with the Dolphins.
