The 68-year-old man accused of fatally shooting two sheriff deputies in Maryland on Wednesday had a warrant out for his arrest after he ran from Maitland police in April, reports say.

David Brian Evans was also killed in the shootout that started about 11:45 a.m. inside a Panera Bread in Harford County, about 30 miles northeast of Baltimore.

Authorities said Deputy Patrick Dailey — a 30-year veteran with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office — was in uniform and responding to an unknown call from the restaurant.

When he got inside, Evans pulled a gun and shot Dailey in the head, reports say.

The incident then moved outside onto the streets of the shopping center.

That’s when Deputy Mark Logsdon — a 16-year veteran — was killed, according to Maryland authorities.

Officials described Evans as a transient and said he had a warrant for his arrest out of Harford County.

He was also wanted on a warrant out of Orange County for resisting an officer without violence, records show, stemming from the April 23 incident with Maitland police.

An officer working patrol spotted Evans about 4 a.m. sleeping in a car parked in an office-building parking lot on Pembrook Drive, a police report states.

The officer said the older Ford Taurus was partially concealed under a tree and it appeared as if someone was living inside.

There were clothes hanging from a line in the backseat, “trash everywhere, dirty clothes on the seats and a strong odor of body sweat,” the report states.

Evans woke up when the officer pointed a flashlight inside the car, police said.

He started acting “nervous,” when the officer started running his license plate, the report states.

Evans then grabbed his keys and drove off, without turning on his headlights or stopping at a stop sign, police said.

Officers followed for a

short while, as Evans drove east in the westbound lanes of Maitland Boulevard and then crossed a concrete median.

Police discontinued their chase near State Road 414 and Rose Avenue, when they learned the license plate on his car was stolen.

Officers identified Evans through his driver license photo.

His license was suspended in August 2012, records show.

out violence.

It’s unknown how Evans ended up in Maryland.

He has no arrest history in Florida.

His son, Jeremy Evans, told WBAL-TV in Baltimore that his father was a heavy drinker with emotional problems, but never spoke poorly of police, according to the Associated Press.

He said his father shot his mother 20 years ago and she thought he was at the Panera to hurt her Wednesday, the AP said.
