Florida St. falls 85-72 at Syracuse

Michael Gbinije scored 22 points and Malachi Richardson added 17 for host Syracuse (17-8, 7-5 ACC) in a 85-72 win Thursday over FSU (16-8, 6-6), which was led by Devon Bookert’s 15.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Michael Gbinije scored 22 points, Malachi Richardson 17 and four Syracuse players scored in double figures as the Orange rode a dominating second half to defeat Florida State 85-72 on Thursday night.

Tyler Lydon chipped in with 15 points and Trevor Cooney 10 for the Orange (17-8, 7-5 ACC), who won their fourth straight and seventh in their last eight.

Devon Bookert led Florida State (16-8, 6-6) with 15 points. Malik Beasley had 14 and Dwayne Bacon 11. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak.

Syracuse outscored Florida State 43-27 in the second half on the strength of 71 percent shooting. The Orange hit 15 of 21 from the field, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range. The Seminoles made just 9 of 26 from the field in the second half and only 2 of 10 from the 3.

For the game, Syracuse hit 62 percent from the field and 8 of 17 from beyond the arc.

The Orange had a 42-39 lead at halftime but came out strong after intermissi­on, outscoring the Seminoles 16-3 in the first four minutes and hitting seven of their first 10 shots, including two 3-pointers by Gbinije.

Dajuan Coleman, who had just two points in the first 20 minutes, opened the half by scoring Syracuse’s first six points and assisting on another basket. The Orange scored the first eight points of the second half, extending their lead to 50-39 with 17:51 to go.

Florida State hosts No. 12 Miami Sunday.
