Indiana holds on to defeat Iowa

-

Yogi Ferrell scored 14 points and Troy Williams added 13 as Indiana rallied to upset No. 4 Iowa 85-78 on Thursday night after blowing a big lead in Bloomington, Ind.

Indiana (20-5, 10-2 Big Ten) pulled into a threeway for the conference lead and gave coach Tom Crean his fourth 20-win season at the school.

Jarrod Uthoff led the Hawkeyes (19-5, 10-2) with 24 points, and Mike Gesell had 17. Iowa lost for the first time in four games.

It could have been much easier.

Indiana was cruising in the first half, building a 16-point lead before giving it away.

The Hawkeyes closed to 45-38 at the half and scored the first nine points of the second half to grab the lead.

Trailing 60-56 with 9:35 left, Indiana regained the lead with 14-2 run and never trailed again.

Ferrell took a shot to the side of the face, then stepped to the free-throw line and calmly sank two free throws to give the Hoosiers 72-66 lead.

But the Hawkeyes wouldn’t go away. Trailing by nine with 4:34 to play, Iowa was within 79-76 when Gesell made two free throws with 22.5 seconds left.

But Collin Hartman scored for the Hoosiers and Ferrell made four straight free throws to seal it.

California 83, Oregon 63:

Jabari Bird scored 16 of his season-high 24 points in the first half and punctuated his big night with a reverse dunk in the final seconds, leading the Golden Bears over the No. 11 Ducks in Berkeley, Calif.

The Golden Bears (16-8, 6-5 Pac-12) never trailed and led by as many as 25 while remaining unbeaten at Haas Pavilion.

It was Cal’s third win over a ranked team and second in less than three weeks.

Jaylen Brown added 16 points, Ivan Rabb had 13 points and seven rebounds, while Tyrone Wallace finished with 10 points in his return to the lineup after missing nearly a month because of injury.

Dillon Brooks scored 17 points for the Ducks (20-5, 9-3), who saw their sixgame winning streak snapped.
