Miscellaneous
Two unrelated factors can cause a delay in getting your Mardi Gras on, so plan accordingly. Since last year’s event, construction has begun on the Interstate 4 project, so traffic might back up even more than usual between Universal and downtown Orlando.
Secondly, for security reasons, Universal Orlando is testing the use of metal detectors. In addition to a bag check, you — and everyone else — may be asked to dump the contents of your pockets, temporarily, and walk through an airport-style security device or be wanded by security personnel.
The Twister attraction is not only closed, the building that housed it is practically gutted at this point. Of course, so are the handy-to-concerts restrooms that were in there. Plan ahead.
Visitors can line up early in the day for the concerts. Trust me, there were plenty of Hayniacs — a.k.a. soakedto-bone Hunter Hayes fans — last week.
Yes, they still throw beads from the floats. Be prepared for crazed grown-ups aggressively jockeying for little strung-together plastic balls. (Eventually some fall at your feet, and I like to give those to eager but not-as-fast-asadults children.)
Remember, the parades and concerts go on, rain or shine. Although I overheard a team member tell a guest last weekend that was true “unless there’s a tornado.” Dude, they shut down Twister.
