No. 1 UF defeats UM 5-0

CORAL GABLES — For Miami, it’s becoming the stuff of nightmares. For Florida, it’s becoming routine.

The Hurricanes and the Gators — two of the nation’s top college baseball teams — renewed their rivalry Friday. As they have in so many of their recent meetings, the Gators prevailed.

This time top-ranked Florida used a combination of potent hitting and dominant pitching from ace Logan Shore to pick up a 5-0 win over sixth-ranked Miami (4-1) in the opener of a three-game series at Mark Light Field.

“We had a couple chances, not many, but we didn’t do a very good job swinging the bat,” Miami coach Jim Morris said. “We’ve got to hit line drives and get on base ... We’ve got to play better. One game is one game. We have to be ready to play [Saturday], win [Saturday] and then you expect to win on Sunday.”

The Gators, winners of six straight to start the season, have beaten their southern rivals in six of their last seven meetings. Two of those came last June in Omaha at the College World Series.

So understandably, Miami’s players said they entered this weekend with a chip on their shoulders.

That chip, though, couldn’t help the Hurricanes offense, which struggled mightily against Shore.

Shore, who recorded a win against Miami in the College World Series, stymied the Hurricanes, holding them hitless the first three innings.
