charged with kidnapping an infant at gunpoint, then abandoning the child in the Orlando area.

A 23-year-old woman charged with the kidnapping at gunpoint of an infant from a Broward County home was stopped on Florida’s Turnpike after she abandoned the 2-month-old girl, still strapped in a car seat, alone in an apartment just east of Orlando International Airport, authorities said Sunday.

Stephanie Luna Augustin was pulled over Saturday south of Yeehaw Junction by a Florida Highway Patrol trooper who spotted her alone and heading south in the same dark blue 2010 Nissan Altima that had been described in two statewide Amber Alerts. The alerts went out after the infant was abducted late Friday night from an apartment at 2770 NW 14th Court in the Roosevelt Gardens neighborhood, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said. The child, Taraji Kemp, was found apparently unharmed in an apartment where Augustin lived, according to sheriff ’s department spokeswoman Joy Oglesby.

“She was still in her car seat, still wearing the same onesie,” said Oglesby. “She is in good condition and will be well.”

But, said Oglesby, “the child had been abandoned.” It’s unclear how long the baby was left alone. The infant was kept overnight at Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando and was in the custody of the state’s Department of Children and Families.

She was to be reunited with her mother Sunday evening, Oglesby said.

Augustin has been charged with kidnapping and aggravated child abuse with a deadly weapon. She was booked late Saturday into the Broward County jail, where she is being held without bond.

Also is custody is Augustin’s 14-year-old cousin, thought to be her accomplice in the kidnapping.

Augustin dropped him off in Miami before heading to Orlando, Oglesby said.
