Olympian Phelps to swim in Orlando

Record-setting Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps and roughly 40 other members of the USA Swimming national team are entered at an Arena Pro Swim Series event Thursday through Saturday at the YMCA Aquatic Center (8422 Internatio­nal Dr., Orlando).

Phelps is entered in four events. He is seeded first in the 100-meter butterfly and the 100 freestyle, second in the 100 backstroke and fourth in the 200 breaststro­ke.

Phelps, 30, holds the record for the most medals won by any Olympic athlete, regardless of sport. He has 22 overall, including 18 gold. Phelps is making a bid to qualify for his fourth Olympics this summer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Olympians Missy Franklin, Katie Ledecky

and Natalie Coughlin are also among the more than 500 swimmers expected to compete in Orlando.

Wild cards set

Stephanie Nemtsova of Plantation and Ulyana Shirokova of Russia have earned wild cards for a $10,000 USTA Pro Circuit tournament March 13-20 at the Orlando Tennis Center.

Nemtsova, 17, outlasted former UF tennis player Alexis King 6-2, 2-6, 10-6 in the final to earn a spot in the 32-woman main draw. Nemtsova is originally from Russia. Shirokova beat Jacqueline Pelletier of Hilton Head Island, S.C., 6-4, 6-3 in her final match.

Coach hired

Clay Harrell, who spent the past two seasons on the Portland Thunder’s staff, was hired as the line coach for the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League. He replaces former UCF player Steve Edwards, who left to pursue other opportunit­ies.
