O’Sullivan lands contract extension

- Edgar Thompson

GAINESVILLE — Florida’s Kevin O’Sullivan is now the highest-paid baseball coach in the nation and will not be going anywhere for a long, long time.

O’Sullivan has signed a 10-year deal that will pay him $1.25 million annually and included a $500,000 signing bonus, the school confirmed Wednesday.

O’Sullivan, 47, has the highest winning percentage (.677) of any UF baseball coach and a sterling record of 396-189. His teams won 104 games the past two seasons, including a school record 44 regular-season games in 2016.

He has signed three No. 1 recruiting classes, including the school’s first in 2009.

Florida has advanced to the NCAA Tournament every season under O’Sullivan and reached the College World Series in five of the past seven seasons. The Gators were the No. 1 seed in June, but were ousted from the CWS after two games.

Around that time, national power Texas reportedly eyed O’Sullivan to replace the legendary Augie Garrido, who retired after 20 seasons and three national titles in Austin.

If O’Sullivan were to leave UF after next season, he would owe the school a $1 million buyout.

He would owe $750,000 if he left after 2018 and $500,000 if he were to leave any time prior to 2025, when the contract expires.

If O’Sullivan were terminated, the school would owe him $500,000 for each year remaining on the contract.
