Miami’s Williams enjoys trips home

- Shandel Richardson

CORAL GABLES — Miami Hurricanes fullback Marquez

Williams is starting to get used to this homecoming thing. Two weeks after playing within a couple hours of his former school, he returns to his home state when the Hurricanes play at Georgia Tech. Williams grew up in Athens, Ga., about an hour drive from Atlanta.

“I went home just last week,” said Williams, who used the bye week to visit family. “It’s exciting. I have a lot of friends and family who want to come to the game or will be watching the game. It’s not too far from Athens.”

The feeling will almost resemble when Williams played at Appalachian State Sept. 17. He was a three-year starter at nearby Mars Hill University in North Carolina before transferring during the offseason.

“Going back to North Carolina was nice,” Williams said. “The scenery kind of took me to back to Mars Hill with all the mountains. It was a fun game. I had a lot of family and friends there.”

He expects a similar turnout this weekend. He said he will try to get many tickets as possible to accommodate the requests. Williams, a redshirt sophomore, will make his third start of the season Saturday against the Yellow Jackets. Although primarily used as a blocker, he’s caught two passes for 19 yards and a touchdown.

“It really depends on how many tickets I get,” Williams said. “If I get a lot of tickets, I’m pretty sure I can put all of them to use.” Next game: No. 14 UM at Georgia Tech, noon Saturday, ESPN2
