Lions face TFC without Giovinco
Orlando City got a little bit of relief during its road trip at Toronto FC. Prolific goal scorer and reigning MLS MVP Sebastian
Giovinco missed the match late Wednesday night. Giovinco has been recovering from injury and was unlikely to line up against the Lions, but he was not completely ruled out until 45 minutes before kickoff.
Shea hit with yellow card
Orlando City's Brek Shea started in the midfield after primarily coming off the bench the past few games.
However, Shea let his frustration over early contact in the match bubble over shortly before halftime.
He was hit with a yellow card in the 45th minute for dissent. As a result of previous yellow card accumulation, Shea will miss the team's home match Sunday against Montreal.
Harris up for NWSL honors
Orlando Pride goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris has been named a finalist for National Women’s Soccer League Goalkeeper of the Year.
The final round of voting for the NWSL’s end-of-season awards is through 11:59 tonight. The winner will be announced on Tuesday.
Despite missing five matches due to U.S. women's national team call-ups, Harris finished the year second NWSL in saves (62) after facing 82 shots on goal, the third most in the league.
The 30-year-old Satellite Beach native earned NWSL Save of the Week honors nine times, winning each time she was nominated.
Dempsey out for rest of season
Seattle Sounders star Clint Dempsey will miss the remainder of the Major League Soccer season due to an irregular heartbeat that already has forced him to miss more than a month of action, the club announced Tuesday.
Dempsey also is expected miss U.S. men's national team friendlies and World Cup qualifying matches against Mexico and Costa Rica in November, according to an ESPN report.
The Sounders are three points behind in the race for a Western Conference playoff spot with two more games left to play than more most of their league foes. Seattle has gone 2-1-2 and since Dempsey has been sidelined.
Seattle announced in August that Dempsey was getting treatment for the irregular heartbeat and he briefly returned to training two weeks ago, but he did not participate in workouts last week.
Dempsey ranks fourth among the Sounders with eight goals and two assists this season. The playmaker has recorded 37 goals and 23 assists during 82 MLS regular-season and playoff appearances.
He ranks second in U.S. men's national team history in scoring, connecting on 52 goals during 130 matches.
Seattle Sounders general manager Garth Lagerwey said he hopes Dempsey will return for the 2017 season.
