Super Bowl bet ends in blows between friends

- By Stephanie Allen Staff Writer

A Super Bowl party Sunday in Winter Garden didn’t go quite as everyone planned: It ended with two friends in the Orange County Jail.

When Winter Garden police showed up at the house on Charlotte Street about 10:35 p.m., they found more than a dozen family members and friends shouting at each other, an arrest report states.

Broken glass and upended chairs were scattered from the kitchen to the living room. Food and drink were on the floor.

Chandardat Singh, 38, told officers he and his friend Bharat Pearaylall, 49, had bet one another $50 on the outcome of the football game, according to an arrest report.

Things didn’t look so good for Singh throughout most of the game, as his team — the New England Patriots — trailed.

Everything started to change in the fourth quarter when the Patriots made a comeback, and Singh commented that he planned to buy a pair of shoes for his wife when he won the bet, the report states.

That didn’t sit too well with Pearaylall, Singh told police. The men started shouting and then one charged the other — neither could agree on who started the fight — and they ended up on the kitchen floor.

Both men told police different stories about how the other grabbed a kitchen knife and started swinging, according to the report.

No one was seriously hurt and the men decided not to press charges, but their wives told police they wanted to, so each was arrested on one count of battery.

Officers said they also found probable cause to arrest the men on a misdemeanor gambling charge.
