He couldn’t see a face, but he heard a voice coming from the wreckage of the mangled plane.

“He’s moving. He answered me,” the caller told a 911 dispatcher.

The small plane’s wings had been stripped off, and the fuselage was upsidedown in a heavily wooded area near the Spruce Creek Fly-In community.

The caller did not see the plane go down but he heard it and then smelled gas, he said.

Emergency crews moments later.

Volusia County sheriff ’s officials said the plane crashed about 6:40 a.m., shortly after taking off from Spruce Creek Airport just west of Interstate 95 near Port Orange.

Fire-rescue crews worked for nearly an hour to free pilot Alan Kanabay, 65, and his wife, Wendy Kanabay, 64, officials said.

Both were alive and transported to a hospital, where they both were listed in stable condition Friday afternoon, according to the Sheriff ’s Office.

Details about their injuries weren’t released.

Sheriff’s officials said the couple is from Illinois.

Another 911 caller told a dispatcher he was outside when the plane took off and he watched as it headed straight into some low fog.

He said he then heard it hit the ground.

It is unclear what caused the small plane to crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration was called to investigate.

Records show Alan Kanabay has an active private pilot’s license. arrived
