Paul Reed is player of the year in the Sentinel’s 2016-17 All-Area team for boys basketball.

The Sentinel’s 2016-17 All-Area boys basketball roster is so loaded with talent that two of the four area standouts who earned state Player of the Year honors for their class are not on the first team.

Here are the premier players from a season that saw Kissimmee Osceola, Leesburg and Orlando Christian Prep win state championsh­ips while Wekiva, Edgewater, Deltona Trinity Christian and Wildwood finished as runners-up:

Player of the Year

Paul Reed, Wekiva, 6-8, Sr.

Notable: The DePaul signee was the defensive stopper and goto guy for a team that earned the Mustangs’ first district region championsh­ips and first state tourney berth. He averaged 18.2 points and 11.4 rebounds for the Class 9A state runner-up team and brought his A game to the postseason. Reed delivered 28 points, 13 rebounds and 3 assists in a statesemif­inal win vs. South Miami, and 18-3-2 in an all-Central Florida state-final loss to Kissimmee Osceola — while shooting 57 percent from the floor (16-of-28) in the final four.

Quotable: “Paul is a dynamic big man who is able to score on the block as well as the perimeter, a true definition of matchup nightmare,” said Wekiva coach Gersino Lubin. “He was consistent with leading his team in multiple facets.”

All-Area first team

Chaundee Brown, The First Academy, 6-5, Sr. Buzz: Big-time Wake Forest recruit and 4A state player of year averaged 24.7 points, with 30 and 35 in consecutiv­e postseason wins. Also 6.7 rebounds for 26-2 team. Michael Devoe, Oak Ridge, 6-4, Jr.

Buzz: Do-it-all leader for team that lost 63-60 to 9A state champ Osceola. Averaged 22.4 points, 6.9 rebounds, 4.8 assists. Interest list includes Miami, UCF and UF. Nassir Little, Orlando Chr. Prep, 6-7, Jr. Buzz: Elite prospect, and dunk artistry is only one element of extraordin­ary skill set. Averaged 14.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists for balanced 3A state champs. Anfernee Simons, Edgewater, 6-3, Sr.

Buzz: Class 7A player of the year led state runner-up Eagles in

points (23.3) and assists (4.2) and was second in rebounds (7.2). Class of 2018 Louisville recruit. Malik William, The First Academy, 6-8, Sr.

Buzz: Point-forward had one triple-double with 11 assists, two others with 10 blocked shots. Averaged 11.5 ppg, 11.2 rpg, 5.1 apg, and 4.5 blocks. Signed with Clemson.

All-Area second team

Amorie Archibald, Deltona Trinity Chr., 6-3, Sr.

Buzz: 3A state player of the year scored 43 points in state semifinal and averaged 22.3 along with 5.3 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game. Signed with Louisiana Tech. Tevin Florent, Kissimmee Osceola, 6-6, Sr. Buzz: Unsigned prospect was stat stuffer in every category and senior mainstay for 9A state championsh­ip team. Averaged 14 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists. David Nickelberr­y, Windermere Prep, 6-8, Sr. Buzz: Versatile Memphis

signee averaged 16 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists for team that played anybody, anytime and fell just an eyelash short of 5A state tournament. Ivan Smith, Oviedo, 6-0, Sr.

Buzz: Lacked size, but not athleticis­m, acrobatics or intensity. He averaged 20.4 points per game and usually included a highlightr­eel dunk or two per game. Career spanned four district titles. Jose Placer, Master’s Academy, 6-1, Jr. Buzz: Hardnosed guard made most of his chance to run show in first season with Eagles. He averaged 19.7 points and 5.7 assists. Visited Wichita State this month.
