BOYS BASKETBALL ALL-INDEPENDENT TEAM
The Sentinel’s 2016-17 all-area team for independent schools playing outside the FHSAA playoff system is also an international team. All six players named hail from states or nations outside Florida.
R.J. Barrett, Luegentz Dort, Marcus Carr and Andrew Nembhard all are from Canada. Sylvain Francisco is from France. David Sloan left Kentucky to play his senior season at the new Conrad Academy program in Orlando.
Player of the Year
R.J. Barrett, Montverde Academy, 6-7, Soph.
Noteable: ESPN’s No. 1-rated sophomore prospect averaged 21.5 points, 7.4 rebounds and 3.33 assists for Montverde team that is headed back to the Dick’s Sporting Goods High School National Tournament (March 30-April 1). Barrett was the City of Palms Classic MVP and a Naismith Trophy third team All-American.
