Minicamp storylines to watch

- By Rick Stroud

TAMPA — The Bucs began their three-day mandatory minicamp Tuesday, the last time the team will be assembled until training camp in late July. By then, HBO’s “Hard Knocks” will have cameras everywhere at One Buc Place.

To the naked eye, there’s not much difference between this and an Organized Team Activity, other than everyone must attend.

Here are a few things we will be watching, understanding that the storylines will continue well into the summer.

Jameis Winston and his precision with receivers: This is something that will be demanded of Winston in his third season. His 33 interceptions over the past two seasons is unacceptable. Knowledge of the system and NFL experience should help. But Winston has to become efficient throwing to newcomers — WR DeSean Jackson, WR Chris Godwin and TE O.J. Howard.

Ryan or Ryan? The backup QB battle will get a little more scrutiny with Ryan Fitzpatrick and Ryan Griffin battling for the No. 2 spot. Fitzpatrick’s lack of arm strength is a concern but he throws with anticipation and isn’t afraid to take some chances. Griffin has come on the past few weeks but will have to make his case in the preseason. Head coach Dirk Koetter says not to write him off yet.

Just kicking it: This battle will last until the first week of the regular season. But there is tension. And drama. And no clear leader entering training camp between Robert Aguayo and Nick Folk. Last impressions before training camp are always important.

Rookie achievement: Among the rookies, which players look like they could play enormous roles early in 2017? Godwin has been a star in the off-season. S Justin Evans showed range but missed some time with an injury. Howard has had some drops now and then, but you figure he’ll be a big part of the offense in the run and pass game. A lot has been thrown at these guys. How much have they progressed this off-season?

The defense fights back: Off-season workouts mean little in terms of projecting success in the regular season. It is shorts and helmets. No contact. The offense should and often dominates. But this is the week for the Bucs’ defense to compete and even the playing field.
