Letter: We must guard against election hacking.

-

The article “Officials outline Russia hacks” in Thursday’s Sentinel reports that Russia hacked or attempted to hack the voter-registration databases in 21 states. My bet is that there is little similarity in the construct of these databases or the way they are protected from hacking for these 21 states.

This is because each state runs its own election the way it sees fit. It makes sense that an attempt was made to hack all 50 states’ voter databases. It may well be that the other 29 states weren’t hacked because they did a better job of setting up and protecting their databases.

I’m a strong believer in states’ rights, but in this case, there should be national cyber-security standards to control our national elections and the databases that are used to run them. Voting in national elections should be run the same in all 50 states. Ralph Dunsworth Oviedo
