A Stetson University
student is arrested after he made threats against the school on social media, DeLand police say.
A Stetson University student was arrested Sunday after he made threats against the school on social media, DeLand police said.
Griffin Powell, 18, made “very specific” threats — with references to bombs and gas — on Snapchat, DeLand Police Chief Jason Umberger said at a news conference Monday.
“They were very specific, and they were concerning to us,” he said.
The threats were made Sept. 8, according to an arrest report. Police did not provide samples of the messages.
Umberger said a fellow student saw the posts and alerted authorities. Powell, who had been living in an on-campus residence hall, did not target any individual student, authorities said.
Police said Powell has been banned from campus while the investigation is underway.
Monday was the first day of classes since Stetson closed Sept. 8 in anticipation of Hurricane Irma. Students who lived oncampus began returning to their residences Sunday night.
“I want you to know that we take the issues and concerns you bring to us very seriously, so if you see or hear anything that gives you pause or makes you feel uneasy, please say something,” Stetson University President Wendy Libby said in a Facebook post.
Powell was arrested in Clay County on charges of threatening to discharge a destructive device. He was released after posting $20,000 bail, authorities said.
