Jones completes shutout

-

The public address announcer labeled the game “The Battle for Orlando,” but Tuesday night’s football showdown between longtime rivals Jones and Oak Ridge turned out to be a lopsided affair.

Senior Aaron Thompson ran for three touchdowns, and senior Quadry Jones passed for three TDs and more than 100 yards to lead the host Tigers to a 40-0 blowout victory at Booker T. Reddick Field. The game was a continuation of the contest from Sept. 1 that was postponed due to inclement weather.

“We were excited to be out here,” said Jones coach Elijah Williams, whose team is ranked No. 7 in Class 5A and No. 5 in the Sentinel Super 16. “Do what we love. But we made a lot of mistakes. We’ve been off for like 10, 11 days.”

In winning its second consecutive game, Jones (2-1) scored on all three of its possessions when the game resumed in the second quarter. Thompson scored on TD runs of 17 and 20 yards, and Jones threw a 19-yard TD pass to Jadan Robinson.

Je’quan Burton’s second TD catch forced a running clock in the third quarter.

The Tigers defense limited Oak Ridge to just 97 yards and registered five sacks in the final three quarters. Daquan Evans had an interception for the Tigers.

Oak Ridge (0-3) was led by quarterback Malik Davis, who had 79 yards passing in Tuesday’s three quarters.

West Orange girls volleyball is off to an 11-0 start going into a home match against perennial power Bishop Moore (9-2) tonight at 7.

The Warriors have firepower, with six of their seven starters already committed to major colleges. They went 5-0 while dropping just one set to win last weekend’s Winter Park Showcase tournament and then swept Apopka in three games on Tuesday night at home.

Bishop Moore is home on Thursday night at 6:30 vs. Lake Highland Prep (12-2).

Nationally-ranked Oviedo (6-0) is at home against crosstown rival Hagerty (5-1) on Thursday night at 7. The Huskies’ lone loss was 3-1 against visiting Oviedo three weeks ago.
