A Lake County deputy sheriff has been placed on administrative leave after a Florida Highway Patrol trooper was arrested Friday for alleged sexual crimes involving a teenager, the Sheriff ’s Office said Monday.

The deputy “possibly knew of the abuse and failed to immediately report it as required by state statute,” Sheriff’s Lt. John Herrell said.

The deputy placed on leave wasn’t identified. Law-enforcement officers are among a group of officials — including school teachers, doctors and day care workers — who are required by law to report child abuse.

FHP trooper Chad Corriveau, 32, is charged with sexually abusing a female teenager between November and January in Groveland, according to an arrest report. He also is charged with showing obscene material to a minor.

Police conducted a forensic interview with the girl after receiving a tip Friday, the day Corriveau was arrested.

On two occasions, Corriveau used sex toys to restrain the girl and, in one case, kept her for four hours, the report said.

“The juvenile victim indicated that at no time did she tell the defendant that she did not wish to participate because [Corriveau] is short tempered and she was afraid for her safety,” the report said.

Corriveau has been with the FHP since May 2009. He has been placed on administrative leaving pending the charges’ outcome, FHP spokeswoman Kim Montes said.

As for the allegations against Corriveau, she said, “We don’t want to comment as another agency is investigating a charge.”
