An Osceola County man was arrested Saturday on an attempted-murder charge after being caught on a hotel surveillance camera leaving the scene of a shooting with a gun in hand, accompanied by his girlfriend and their 8-month-old child, investigators said.

Smith Thomas, 41, faces charges of attempted murder and child neglect without great bodily harm. His girlfriend, Rhonda Wilson, 41, also faces a child-neglect charge.

Osceola County deputy sheriffs were called just after 11:30 p.m. Saturday to Rodeway Inn Kissimmee Maingate West at 7455 W. U.S. Highway 192 and found a 26-year-old man who had been shot, said Maj. Jacob Ruiz, a sheriff ’s spokesman.

The man, whom deputies did not identify, was taken to a hospital in stable condition. He said he had gotten into an argument with another man who was wearing a white tank top and multicolored pants, court records show.

The 26-year-old is expected to live and said he wants to press charges against the shooter, records show.

Deputies reviewed surveillance video from the hotel and found footage of Thomas, wearing the same clothes the 26-year-old described, walking out with a gun.

Behind him was Wilson, who was carrying their 8-month-old child, records show.

Deputies arrested both of them, saying Wilson “willfully neglected her child and failed to remove herself and her child out of harm’s way.”

Thomas is being held without bail in the Osceola County Jail. Wilson was given a $10,000 bond.
