Comic Cotter skewers himself first

Eater” is about a husband who imprisons his wife. “Is that the message you want to send kids?” he asks. “It’s fun to point out the absurdity of things.”

His Snow White and Sleeping Beauty jokes would seem perfect for Orlando. “I don’t know what I’m going to do until I get there,” he said. “It’s so close to Disney World, that will be in my head. I have a dialogue with the audience and sees where it goes.”

Cotter also sends up clichés. Sample: “Children grow like weeds and, trust me, there will be days that you wish you had some weed killer.”

The comedian has turned more political and closes his act with a Donald Trump impression. “Trump is a gift from God to the comedian world,” Cotter said. “I’m not throwing stones. The last time I voted, it was for Clay Aiken and he lost to Ruben [Studdard],” he added, referring to the second season of “American Idol.”

“I’m not Bill Maher on the left and I’m not Dennis Miller on the right. I’m right down the middle,” Cotter said. “I’m not out to offend anybody. It’s the big elephant in the room, one you’ve got to address, so I might as well have some fun with it.”

Competing on “America’s Got Talent” was the best thing he has done in his career, he said. “It was a perfect venue for me,” he said. “I kick myself for not doing it sooner. It has such an amazing effect on your career. We all do late night. That’s a fraction of audience you get in prime time.”

Comics don’t have a lot of options other than sitcoms to be seen in prime time, he said. But he appeared on “AGT” and “Last Comic Standing,” where his wife fared better than he did. They’ve shot the pilot for a cooking show about spouses.

“I’ve been married 16 years. Her entire act is besmirching me, throwing me under the bus,” Cotter said. He used to offer rebuttals when they toured together. “Now I can do a whole half-hour on being married.”
