Belyeu a triple threat for Umatilla

When isn’t carrying the Umatilla girls soccer team with her play on the field, the aspiring Air Force Academy cadet is hauling an even bigger workload off of it.

The junior home-schooled student, who tallied a 1480 on the SAT, has also spent the winter season as a member of Umatilla’s varsity girls basketball and weightlift­ing teams.

“Academics always come first,” Belyeu said. “After that, with having three sports at the same time, it’s all about prioritizi­ng.” Before focusing her attention on the upcoming girls soccer district tournament, Belyeu will wrap up a four-day stay in Tampa today where she’s competing with her speech and debate team at a regional qualifier.

“Her workload and her schedule is beyond belief,” Umatilla girls soccer coach said.

Belyeu, an attacking midfielder who began playing soccer at age four, has recorded five hat tricks this season. She racked up six goals in a game against Tavares on Jan. 4.

Umatilla (7-10-1) faces South Sumter (6-6-2) in the opening round of the Class 2A, District 6 tournament at The Villages on Monday at 3 p.m.

Class 6A defending champ and favorite Leesburg (16-1) has won 13 consecutiv­e games going into its Saturday afternoon boys basketball matchup against another team that will push the pace, Windermere Prep, in the Kaylin High Master’s Classic.

Game time is 4:20 in the third of five games today in the showcase event at Master’s Academy.

Edgewater (13-3), rated among the best teams in Class 8A, meets 4A contender Master’s at 6.

The Eagles are undefeated against Florida teams this season with 6-foot-8 senior showing the way. The Samford signee is averaging 10.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 2.8 blocked shots and 1.4 steals per game despite sitting out the fourth quarter in a number of lopsided Edgewater outcomes.
