Harvey efforts please trio

HOUSTON — Orlando Magic teammates and have Houston roots and share deep pride in how well the city has recovered from Hurricane Harvey, the vicious storm that inundated the city and surroundin­g areas with flood waters last August.

“It’s still devastatin­g,” Simmons said. “I think a lot of people came together for the better of things. The city’s almost back to 100 percent.

“A couple friends of the family really had it bad. I had to end up giving one of my friends that’s the same size as me, I gave him basically my whole wardrobe: about 20 pairs of shoes that I just had and clothes and stuff because he lost everything. It was real bad and it’s still bad.

“There’s still some families that’s sleeping in tents. It’s crazy. But I think slowly the city is rebuilding and hopefully it gets back to regular soon.”

Simmons has his own harrowing hurricane story.

He and about 20 people — many of them children — waited out the storm in the Houston suburb of Richmond. The flooding around the house became so severe that everyone in it needed to be rescued.

Iwundu and Simmons, on the other hand, were born in Houston.

Augustin, Iwundu and Simmons have followed the city’s ongoing recovery closely.

In addition, NBA officials wanted all 30 teams to participat­e in the Las Vegas league.

Still, the decision represente­d a radical departure for the Magic, who ran and managed their own summer league in Central Florida 14 times since 2002.

League games in Orlando were closed to the public.

In the Las Vegas league, all teams will play three preliminar­y games before they’re seeded in a tournament.

Each team will play at least five games and as many as eight games.
