Oviedo stretches shutout streak

-

The undefeated Oviedo (18-0-0) girls soccer team remains unscored upon this season but is still two shutouts away from breaking the school record going into next Tuesday night’s Class 5A region quarterfinal vs. visiting Dr. Phillips (17-2-1).

Oviedo’s final four team of 2008-09 posted 20 shutouts in a 25-2-1 season. That team played 22 regular season games, compared to 15 this season. The Lions’ 13th-year head coach,

said he has scheduled fewer regular season games over the past six years because of all the club tournaments and games his girls play during the high school season.

“Too many games equal injuries and burn out,” Waisanen said. “Trying to keep them fresh for the post season all while developing a good team chemistry with the games we do play during the regular season. Quality over quantity.”

Waisanen said that with a club schedule of about 10 to 12 games added to the high school workload many of the girls on an Oviedo team that goes all the way will have played more than 35 games in a span of 100 days. And going all the way is always the goal for the Lions.

Oviedo, which is riding a 49-game unbeaten streak into next week, has won consecutive 5A state championships and four large-class titles in the past seven seasons. Another title for a senior-laden squad would give the Lions a 23-0-0 record this season and stretch the undefeated streak to 54.

DP has 13 shutouts and has allowed only 0.47 goals per game while setting a school record for wins in a season.

First-year Windermere High edged Hagerty 45-44 to win its eighth consecutive boys basketball game on Tuesday night. The Wolverines (14-6) host No. 5 Edgewater (15-4) tonight. Elsewhere in basketball:

scored 26 points and Super 16 No. 7 Central Florida Christian Academy (17-3) won 74-55 win vs. Windermere Prep (11-12).

had 31 points and 16 rebounds as top-ranked Oak Ridge (19-3) won 101-71 at Lake Nona (7-13). scored 27 points to become the first Nona player to score 1,000 career points.

scored 36 points and West Oaks Academy (20-5) routed Oldsmar Christian 104-60.

National No. 1 Montverde Academy (27-0) plays its final home gametonight vs. Lakeland Lake Gibson.

Three Dr. Phillips girls who are state meet qualifiers in both wrestling and weightlifting had to make a choice on where to go this weekend.

Panthers sophomore and juniors and

will all stay home to compete in the girls wrestling invitational state tournament. The Panthers, as champions of the 2017 event, will host the invitational Friday and Saturday.

Girls wrestling is not a sport that is sanctioned by the Florida High School Athletic Association. Girls weightlifting has been an FHSAAsanctioned sport since 2004.

As expected, the Florida High School Athletic Association’s board of directors stamped its final approval on several changes to its football playoff points system for next season on Monday.

Beginning this fall, teams will be awarded five additional points for all losses. A defeat suffered to a Category 1 top tier team that finishes 8-2 or better is now worth 35 points instead of 30. That matches the 35 points earned for beating a Category 4 team that wins three or fewer games.

Category 2 losses will be worth 30 points and Category 3 losses are worth 25 points. Category 4 losses are up from 15 to 20 points.

The increase in points for losses was recommended as a means to balance the number of points received for wins and losses and encourage teams to play stronger opponents. The proposal as initially presented to football coaches on the FHSAA advisory committee was to boost the points awarded for playing top tier teams, but in discussion it was decided to request that points for all losses be increased.

The FHSAA also clarified how schools are to handle postponed or canceled games, which were problematic in the first year of the new points system.

The new language requires both teams to agree to reschedule the contest for the following day or mutually agree on a later date. A team that does not comply with a makeup date would forfeit the contest.

Head coaches and school administrators must either agree to terminate an interrupted game, resulting in the score being considered final, or decide upon a date of completion before parting ways.

In a unanimous vote, the board approved another coaches advisory committee proposal to add two playoff berths per region for Classes 1A through 4A. Six teams will qualify in 2018 instead of four, with the top two seeds earning byes in the first round.

That change eliminates the open date the smaller classifications had in week four of the postseason this year while bigger schools in Classes 5A through 8A were playing semifinal games.
