Edgewater repels rally to top Boone

-

Edgewater held on for a 47-38 win in a boys basketball rivalry game against Boone on Saturday.

Robert Allen led the visiting Eagles (18-4) with 13 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks. Michael Eads added 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Edgewater led the entire game, but Boone (13-11) cut what was once a 12-point deficit to three on a Da Kevias Bracy layup with 2:35 to go. Bracy, a 6-foot-7 center, was then forced out of the game to clean blood off his shorts, missing two crucial possessions. Edgewater gathered a couple offensive boards and retook control of the game.

“Boone likes to slow the game down, which is the opposite of what we like to do, so to come into their place and get a win is a big step forward for us in the right direction,” Edgewater coach Jason Atherton said.

Edgewater has lost to only one team from the state of Florida, a 73-64 loss to Master’s Academy two weeks ago. MaxPreps rates Edgewater No. 4 in 8A.

“We had five goals at the beginning of the year,” Atherton said. “State title, regional title and district title because you need those to get to states. The fourth is to win the Metro Conference, and the fifth is to beat Boone. So we were able to knock one of those goals off today.”

“All I want to see is a state ring on my finger,” said Allen, a 6-foot-8 forward, who is third in blocked shots (2.6), fifth in assists (5.1) and sixth in rebounding (9.1) in the area.

Boone had been on a five-game winning streak since getting point guard Sean Halloran (15.1 ppg.) back from a hand injury.

Marlon Allen had 15 points for the Braves.

Senior guard Rahsaan Lewis banked in a gamewinning 3-point shot as Windermere Prep snuck by Melbourne Holy Trinity 58-57 in the TFA Shootout.

With under 30 seconds to go and his Lakers (12-12) down 57-55, Lewis pulled up from the left wing to hit the go-ahead 3-pointer. He totaled 27 points.

Four-star junior guard Tre Mann scored 18 as Villages Charter (17-6) handled host The First Academy 58-45 in the nightcap.

Joshua Himel nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to give Providence (18-5) just enough room to pull out a 64-55 win over Master’s Academy (16-6).

Master’s senior Jose Placer scored 26 points in the loss, which halted a 10-game Eagles’ win streak.

Spruce Creek’s Summer Daraio-Rivera broke one FHSAA finals record and tied another while winning thje 110-pound weight class in the 2A girls weightlifting state meet in Panama City.

Daraio-Rivera equaled the weight class record for total lifted at 325 pounds. That included a 165-pound bench press to set a record that was matched Saturday by Alexis Oravets of New Smyrna Beach.

Other area weight-class winners were Osceola’s Virginie Beljour, Summer Daraio Rivera of Spruce Creek, Emily Zientek of Winter Springs, Hannah Goodrich of New Smyrna Beach and Samantha Jefferson of Ocoee.

New Smyrna was third in the team standings. Winter Springs tied for sixth, and Oviedo was eighth.
