Backup QB Allen opts to leave Gators

-

After ending spring practices well behind in the Florida Gators’ quarterback race, has decided to transfer.

Allen, a redshirt freshman, announced his decision Tuesday night on his Twitter account.

The former standout at Fort Lauderdale’s St. Thomas Aquinas committed to UF as a sophomore but wrote that new coach

offense is not the right fit for him.

Allen said he believes Mullen will succeed at UF and thanks him and QBs coach for their support recent months.

Allen also thanked former UF coach in

and offensive coordinator for signing him in 2017.

“I am very sad to say goodbye to Gator Nation but look forward to this new chapter in my life. Go Gators,” Allen concluded.

The 6-foot-3, 199-pound Allen was 4-of-7 passing for seven yards and rushed for 18 yards on three carries during last weekend’s spring game.

Allen, a three-star recruit, arrived with an impressive track record in high school.

Allen closed his career with five-touchdown performance and a second Class 7A state-championship victory.

During his final two seasons at St. Thomas Aquinas, he threw 45 touchdowns and just 15 interceptions.

UCF added junior shooting guard

who signed a letter of intent Wednesday to play for the Knights.

Bertz, a 6-foot-5 guard from Hesperia, Calif., played the past two seasons at East Los Angeles College.

As a sophomore during the 2017-18 season, Bertz shot 48 percent from beyond the arc. He was 79 of 166 from 3-point range. He also averaged 13.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game, shooting 88 percent from the free-throw line. college

Bertz led East Los Angeles to a 24-6 overall record, a 9-1 league mark and a South Coast Conference Championship.

He earned first team allconference honors.

“Frank will bring some versatility to our program with his length on the perimeter,” UCF coach

said. “He has a really good basketball IQ, a good feel for the game, and he’s a knock-down three-point shooter, so I think he’ll provide a lot for us. He’s a team guy and he’ll contribute in a lot of ways, both offensively and defensively.”
