Brevard deputy shoots, injures man in car chase on S.R. 528
A Brevard County deputy shot a man who drove his car toward deputies who were responding to a domestic-violence complaint Thursday morning, Sheriff Wayne Ivey said during a press conference.
After he was shot, authorities say the man led deputies on a car chase that ended after his car was disabled with a tactical maneuver on State Road 528 in Orange County. The suspect was taken to a hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound, the sheriff said.
Authorities haven’t identified the injured man, the woman who made the complaint or the deputy who fired the shot. No deputies were injured during the car chase, Ivey said.
“Every indication was that this was a very serious domestic-related incident that had been taking place for quite some time,” he said.
Authorities were first called to the home in rural Brevard County shortly before midnight. A woman said she was concerned that her ex-boyfriend was at her home. Deputies responded and didn’t find the man, Ivey said. About three hours later, deputies received a second call. They responded again and didn’t find him.
Shortly before 5 a.m., authorities were called for a third time. The woman was speaking quietly and told dispatchers she could hear the man beating on her window, the sheriff said. Deputies responded again and spotted the suspect in a car.
The car rolled forward as deputies were ordering the man out of his car, Ivey said. The car suddenly accelerated, prompting a deputy to fire a single round, he said. Deputies began pursuing the car.
Authorities chased the car on U.S. Highway 1, State Road 46 and Interstate 95 before the chase ended on S.R. 528, Ivey said.
“Every thing we see at this time indicates that all the protocols were followed,” he said.
