Florida Gov. Yosemite Sam?
Years ago, when I worked on Capitol Hill, I heard on a number of occasions how close friends of the late, great John McCain would playfully address him as Yosemite Sam.
The iconic cartoon Yosemite Sam was both ferocious and charming at once.
Ron DeSantis may be the next Yosemite Sam.
Here’s why he defeated an otherwise highly popular conservative and accomplished Florida statesman in Adam Putnam.
The June tweet from President Trump was one major contributing factor, of course. The commander in chief apparently is attracted to highenergy sympathizers, and DeSantis fit the billing. That endorsement set the course for substantial DeSantis momentum.
Moreover, Congressman DeSantis’ ongoing battle with Big Sugar has galvanized a surprising number of coastal Republicans, who are defying conventional wisdom with their pro-environmental positions. A Teddy Roosevelt, pro-environment GOPer might be tough in the general election; advantage in perception went to DeSantis. In fairness to Putnam, his assertive positions and leadership on clean-water solutions have been admirable. Just overshadowed.
Also, Fox News’ comprehensive coverage of DeSantis in these last number of months were just too much for the agricultural commissioner to overcome. Ever since the Nixon-Kennedy debates, visage time on camera in major campaigns has become a turnkey factor. Putnam’s team was overmatched, irrespective of being well-financed.
Last, DeSantis claims he won the debate on Fox News decisively. I was there up close, and I disagree with the decisively part. It was a marvelous heavyweight battle, and both sides could sensibly claim the W. I do think it went to DeSantis. He had become so polished, and comfortable, in front of the Fox cameras.
Putnam and DeSantis are both champion conservatives for our Sunshine State; we’ll be hearing from them both in years to come. Congratulations, gentlemen, on a hardfought battle.
