Hurricane Michael disrupting travel by both plane, rail

- By Wayne K. Roustan

Air and train traffic are being affected by Hurricane Michael and delays and cancellations could linger as the storm travels beyond Florida and its damage to airports is assessed.

Flights were already grounded Wednesday at airports in Tallahassee, Panama City and at other small airports in Florida’s Panhandle, according to the online site FlightAware.com.

The cascading delays and cancellations will likely affect South Florida’s airports. Officials suggest passengers stay in close touch with messages from individual carriers.

As the storm moves along its projected path, airports in other cities such as Atlanta and airports in North and South Carolina are likely to be affected.

Additionally, Hurricane Michael is prompting Amtrak to adjust service to Florida for the safety of its passengers and employees.

Silver Star trains that usually travel from Miami to New York only ran from Miami to Jacksonville, beginning Wednesday.

No alternate transportation was being provided between Jacksonville and New York, officials said.

The Palmetto, which runs between New York and Savannah, Georgia, would operate between New York and Washington, D.C., beginning Thursday.

Amtrak officials said no alternate transportation will be provided between Washington and Savannah.

The Silver Meteor that runs daily from Miami through Orlando to New York, and the Auto Train’s daily service between Sanford and the Washington D.C. area, were still running on schedule but Amtrak officials said that could change as the hurricane gets closer.

Amtrak is waiving fees for passengers who change their reservations.

Check train reservations by calling 1-800-872-7245 or online at Amtrak.com.

Full service is expected to return once the storm passes through the region.
