Improving Casselberry top issue for candidates

- By Dominique Smith By Lisa Maria Garza

Continuing to improve the city of Casselberry is one of the top issues for Mark Busch and Laura Worrell, the two candidates running for Seat 3 on the Casselberry City Commission in the Nov. 6 election.

After 12 years, Commissioner Sandra Solomon is serving her final term on the commission. The Casselberry City Commission serves at-large, meaning commissioners serve the entire city and not a district or neighborhood. College who will be attending UCF in the spring. At UCF, she plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in science communications. “City hall is operating on its own,” she said. “They’re spinning their own wheels. There’s a lot of confusion that’s building a lot of animosity. I’m a firm believer that communication can solve almost any problem.”

Six people were injured on Sunday — three of them critically — in a drive-by shooting in Jacksonville blocks away from TIAA Bank Field, according to the sheriff ’s office.

Five men and one woman, ranging in age from 20s to 70s, were taken to local hospitals after being shot at about 12:30 p.m. outside a laundromat at the intersection of A Philip Randolph Boulevard and Pippin Street, sheriff’s office spokesman Ron Lendvay told a news conference.

The shooting occurred about half a mile from the stadium, where the Jacksonville Jaguars were playing the Houston Texans, but Lendvay said the game was not been affected.

Deputies believe the shots were fired from the passenger side of a grey or silver Nissan Altima or Maxima, Lendvay said.

Authorities don’t know the motive of the shooting, but Lendvay told reporters there is a possibility it may be gangrelated.

Gov. Rick Scott tweeted that he spoke with Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams and offered any state resources the agency may need.

“Our law enforcement officers are working hard to keep people safe,” Scott tweeted. “Please continue to listen to their announcements and updates.”

The sheriff’s office tweeted an alternate traffic route for Jaguar fans to take after the game and Lendvay said anyone who parked near the crime scene would receive an escort back to their vehicle.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s office at 904-630-0500 or email JSOCrimeTips@jaxsheriff.org.
