Orlando Rolón sworn in as OPD chief

New Orlando Police Chief Orlando Rolón laid out his vision Monday for the department, calling for increased technology, bolstering community relations and addressing mental-health issues and posttrauma­tic stress disorder among officers.

Rolón, the city’s 39th police chief and the first Latino to lead the department, was sworn in Monday during a change of command ceremony at the Amway Center.

“I recognize that my vision is ambitious and will require a lot of work and some adjustment­s,” said Rol ón, 54. “However, the Orlando Police Department has a history of leading the way, and together, and with some extra efforts, I am confident that we will accomplish many great things.”

The 25-year department veteran was tapped for the post by Mayor Buddy Dyer earlier this month. Prior to the promotion, he was a deputy chief overseeing the department’s Patrol Services Bureau.

He also served in the Marine Corps Reserves and has worked in most OPD department­s. Rolón commanded the profession­al standards, west patrol and traffic enforcemen­t divisions throughout his tenure and also was on the crisis negotiatio­n team for nearly 20 years. He’s also a former OPD spokesman and liaison to Dyer.

Rolón takes over for John Mina, who retired as chief to run for Orange County sheriff. His last day at work was Friday. Next week, voters will decide among Mina, retired Florida Highway Patrol Chief Joe Lopez and venture capitalist Darryl Sheppard for sheriff to succeed Orange County mayor-elect Jerry Demings.
