Gordon’s 20 help overcome bad start on road

- By Chris Hays

— Aaron Gordon scored 16 points in the third quarter and the Orlando Magic overcame a stretch when they missed 15 consecutive field goals in the first half, eventually pulling away for a 105-90 victory at American Airlines Arena on Tuesday night.

The Heat tried to rally late, but D.J. Augustin’s 3-pointer with 1:37 left was the dagger the Magic needed, bumping the Orlando lead to 13 points. The Magic ended a six-game road stretch 3-3 and improved to 12-12 this season.

Gordon had just four points in the first half and made only 1 of 8 floor shots, but he was fired up in the third. The Magic swingman made 6 of 7 shots after halftime and his play sparked an Orlando run.

The Magic turned a four-point intermission deficit into a 14-point lead, their biggest of the game, at the end of the third quarter.

Orlando ended the third with a 16-2 run, during which the Heat (9-14) missed 6 of their last 7 shots of the quarter. Miami was 5 of 21 in the period while the Magic warmed up, hitting 12 of 24.

“We came out in the second half and obviously Aaron Gordon was just tremendous in the third quarter, both his offense and his defense,” Magic coach Steve Clifford said.

Gordon also had another big night on the boards against the Heat. He grabbed 16 rebounds durMIAMI ing the season-opening victory over Miami and Tuesday night had 13 rebounds. He added a gamehigh 20 points, posting a doubledouble. Nikola Vucevic also had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Terrence Ross added 19 points off the bench and was one of six Magic players to finish with double-figure scoring.

The Magic were rolling right along in the first half, shooting at a 50-percent clip overall and even better from long range, hitting 6 of their first 8 3-point attempts. Orlando led 27-22 with 2:52 left in the first quarter, but then the team hit a drought.

The Magic missed their next 15 field-goal attempts, a lull stretching into the second quarter, and the Magic trailed 50-46 at the break.
