Hat trick from Brown all Montverde needs

- Staff Report

Jody Brown posted a hat trick Tuesday to lead undefeated Montverde Academy to a 3-0 girls soccer victory over visiting Melbourne in a Class 4A, Region 2 quarterfinal.

Montverde (17-0), No 1 in the Sentinel Super Six area rankings, will play at Viera (17-1-2) in Friday’s region semifinal round. Viera won 1-0 against Windermere.

The Hawks met Montverde in the first round in 2018, losing 4-1 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie.

Melbourne (11-4-2), a six-time state champion, tried to neutralize the speed of Brown, named a couple weeks ago to CONCACAF’s Female Best XI for her play for Jamaica’s women’s national team. But Montverde opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Vivian Bessette delivered a pass from just inside the center line over Melbourne defenders and into the box to Brown, who buried a shot from about 20 yards into the bottom right of the net.

Brown made it 2-0 by converting a Carmen Marin cross from the right side. In the 47th minute, Sydney Rivera centered from the right side into Brown, who headed the ball just inside the right post for her third goal. Lynn Ramsey Winter Park advances: In Class 5A girls soccer, Winter Park (20-2-1) continued its torrid scoring pace with a 5-2 win over a 17-1 Lithia Newsome team. The Wildcats have racked up 26 goals in their past five games. Boone (15-6) also advanced and will play at Winter Park on Friday night.

Oak Ridge wins big: Oak Ridge’s area No. 1 boys’ basketball team celebrated its Senior Night in style Tuesday, overwhelming visiting Winter Park 81-48 in the regular-season finale for both teams.

In upping its record against Central Florida schools to 13-1, Oak Ridge (15-5 overall) raced to a 28-15 first-quarter lead behind six 3-pointers, including three from senior Emmanuel Adedoyin. The reigning Class 9A state champion got scoring from nine players in its final tune-up before it hosts next week’s District 5 tournament.

Six-foot-9 senior post player C.J. Walker, an Oregon signee, led the Pioneers with 27 points.

Five of the Pioneers’ seven seniors started: Adedoyin (13 points), Zavien Smith, Tre’ Moni Grimsley, Kaleb Coleman and Walker.

Tray Fluellen had 17 points for Winter Park (13-10), which plays in the 9A, District 4 tournament at Colonial next week. Jeff Gardenour
