Movies are big business

-

David Leavitt, writing on the Central Florida 100 op-ed page Feb. 10, thinks the tax-incentive program for the film industry is all about Hollywood glitz and glamour, and a losing endeavor. It’s actually more about keeping jobs for skilled residents here in Florida, both actors and production personnel, and also about utilizing ancillary businesses that service film production -catering, equipment suppliers, accommodations, restaurants, etc. Not too long ago Disney/MGM Studios (now Disney’s Hollywood Studios), Universal Studios and even smaller independent facilities had year-long employment for talented production personnel, many of whom have since moved to Georgia where they can practice their professions. And, of course, spend their money. If filming were encouraged in Florida those who earn here would buy here, just as they presently do in Georgia and other states that encourage film production, benefiting local merchants and generating tax revenue as well.
