Strong matchups in region finals

Five girls soccer region final matches featuring six teams from the Orlando Sentinel coverage area will play out locally on Tuesday.

Winners advance to state semifinal matches on Friday.

The girls soccer state championsh­ips will be played at DeLand’s Spec Martin Stadium next week on Wednesday (Classes 1A and 2A) and Friday (Classes 3A, 4A, 5A).

All region final games Tuesday start at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Admission is $7.

Class 5A, Region 1

Lake Mary vs. Orange City University

At Daytona State College Records: Lake Mary (12-4-1); University (17-1-0). Buzz: Three-time state champ Lake Mary is in a region final for first time since a 2007 final-four appearance. University, a first-time region finalist, has allowed just five goals in its past 13 matches. Next: Winner plays at Winter Park or Palm Harbor University.

Class 5A, Region 2

Palm Harbor University at Winter Park

At Showalter Field Records: University (15-1-1); Winter Park (20-2-1). Buzz: Winter Park is in a region final for first time since reaching a state semi in 2004. Reigning region winner University, a five-time state champ, is in its sixth consecutiv­e region final. Next: Winner hosts Lake Mary or Orange City University.

Class 4A, Region 3

New Port Richey Mitchell at Montverde Records: Mitchell (19-0-0); Montverde (18-0-0).

Buzz: Jody Brown has 29 goals and 9 assists for defending state champion Montverde, which defeated Mitchell 5-2 in last year’s region final. Mitchell reached a state semi in 2017 after losing three consecutiv­e 4A region finals from 2014-16.

Next: Winner hosts St. John’s Bartram Trail or Niceville.

Class 2A, Region 2

Gainesvill­e P.K. Yonge at Trinity Prep

Records: P.K. Yonge (15-2-2); Trinity Prep (12-4-1).

Buzz: The Saints defeated P.K. Yonge 5-2 in last season’s region final to reach the state semi for first time since a runner-up finish in 2011. Juliette Palechor has scored 31 goals in 14 matches for the visiting Blue Wave.

Next: Winner hosts Jacksonvil­le Bolles or South Walton.

Class 1A, Region 1

Orange Park St. Johns Country Day at The Master’s Academy, 6

Records: St. Johns Country Day (18-2-0); Master’s Academy (12-4-0).

Buzz: St. Johns Country Day has won the past seven 1A state titles dating to 2012, which ties for the longest such streak in the state. Master’s is in a region final for the first time in program history. Next: Winner plays at Indian Rocks Christian or Fort Myers Canterbury.
