Oviedo captures all-sports trophy

- By Buddy Collings

Each year the Orlando Sentinel honors the best all-sports programs in our Greater Orlando coverage area with Varsity Cup and Super Six awards.

Those honors are determined by points standings that factor in the final Sentinel Super Six team rankings for each varsity sport along with the points area schools earn in the Florida High School Athletic Association’s Sunshine Cup allsports count.

Oviedo captured the Varsity Cup all-sports championship for the 2018-19 school year. Here are the Super Six schools with their point total in parenthesis:

1. Oviedo (279)

Oviedo started the year with a fabulous fall championship streak and rode that wave of success all the way to the Varsity Cup championship.

The Lions won three state titles — in girls volleyball, boys swimming and boys bowling — in a span of eight days. Oviedo also placed second at state in girls swimming, finished top four at state in girls bowling and boys cross country, and made a football playoff appearance in that November to remember.

Oviedo had five teams ranked No. 1 in the area. The Lions also had the area’s highest large-class boys track state finish. This is Oviedo’s fifth Super Six finish in six years but its first top three showing since 2005. The Lions were the area all-sports champ once before, in the 2002-03 school year.

2. Winter Park (248)

Winter Park, winner of the Varsity Cup 13 times in the 20-year history of the award, finishes second this time. The Wildcats won state championships in boys golf and competitive cheer and were the state runner-up in girls water polo.

Winter Park led the area with 14 teams ranked in the top six for the area, including a 10-2 football team. That list includes second-ranked squads in girls swimming, girls water polo and boys water polo. Winter Park was No. 3 in the area in boys lacrosse and girls tennis; and No. 4 in girls soccer, boys tennis and boys volleyball.

Both the boys and girls soccer teams reached region finals.

Lake Highland Prep keeps alive its 14-year streak of being in the Super Six with its fourth consecutive third place finish. The Highlanders were led by a wrestling program that won both the dual and individual bracket state championships and a girls lacrosse team that won a state title for the first time. Girls basketball was also ranked No. 1 in the area after a state runner-up finish. The Highlanders were No. 2 in boys lacrosse, No. 3 in boys soccer, and top five in boys cross country and girls swimming.

4. Lake Mary (199)

Lake Mary makes the Super Six for the sixth year in a row and 13th time in all. The Rams captured state championships in girls golf, boys soccer and competitive cheer. Lake Mary’s girls soccer squad reached the final four and was ranked second in the area. The Rams also had the area’s No. 2 team in girls tennis and were ranked in the top five in boys track and field and boys water polo. Lake Mary placed second in the ultra-competitive Seminole Athletic Conference all-sports standings, just ahead of Hagerty and just behind Oviedo.

5. Bishop Moore (188)

The Hornets enjoy a Super Six finish for the ninth time in the past 12 school years. Bishop Moore had the area’s No. 1 boys lacrosse team and ranked No. 2 in girls lacrosse, No. 3 in girls golf, No. 4 in boys golf and No. 6 with a baseball team that reached the final four. The Hornets also claimed a competitive cheer state title, made the football playoffs for the 10th consecutive year, had a 20-win boys basketball season, and totaled a dozen district championships.

6. Hagerty (174)

The Huskies enjoyed a banner year to climb back into the Super Six for the first time since placing sixth for the 2012-13 school year. Hagerty had the area’s No. 2 ranked baseball and girls volleyball teams and were rated No. 3 in wrestling and girls lacrosse. It also had top five squads in girls softball, boys lacrosse, boys soccer and girls bowling. The competitive cheer team won a state title. Hagerty’s district title teams included football and girls water polo.
