Veteran meteorologist Treanor to retire from WKMG

Danny Treanor is retiring. Again. And this time, the veteran meteorologist says, it’s for good. His last day at WKMG-Channel 6 will be Wednesday.

“I want to be able to do things while I’m still capable,” Treanor, 74, said Friday. “I love working because I so defined myself by my work. Sometimes I have a fear of not working. I’m going to have to find other things. I don’t think I’ll be sampling the other TV world anymore.”

Treanor has been in the Orlando TV market since 1978. He worked at WFTV-Channel 9 for 18 years and battled alcoholism in the public eye. (He has been sober 27 years.)

He had a 10-year run at cable channel News 13 that ended in 2013, when he retired with fanfare.

But the next year, he moved to WKMG, starting part time and filling in. Later he became a full-time staffer on the weekends, a schedule he described as “great.”

The CBS affiliate has started running a spot announcing his departure.

“It just says bye, adios, move on,” Treanor joked. (He hasn’t seen the promo.)

Travel is ahead for him. “I went on a trip to Greece four weeks ago and enjoyed it,” he said. “I have a trip booked to Germany and down the Danube next July.”

His run on Orlando television has been gratifying, he says. “But it’s hard for me to take a compliment,” he added. “I’m more of a self-deprecating person.”

What if a viewer wants to thank him?

“I will be most appreciative, say thank you and try to get away as quickly as possible,” he said. “I’m going to become wall fungus.”

There is a chance you could see Treanor back on WKMG during hurricane coverage or filling in at Christmas.

“Any affiliation with TV will be with WKMG,” he said. “What I discovered the most here was a warmth. It reminded me of when I started.”

Yet he was thinking about the future. “If I’m going to do anything, I’ve got to go,” he said. “I can’t keep telling myself I’m 50.”
