Mariners: Former Cy Young Award winner Felix Hernandez will rejoin the Mariners rotation this weekend. Hernandez has missed three months with right shoulder stiffness. He pitched 3-plus innings Monday night for Triple-A Tacoma in his fourth rehab appearance. Hernandez, 33, last pitched for the Mariners on May 11. He’s 1-4 with a 6.52 ERA.
Angels: Mike Trout matched the MLB lead with his career-best 42nd HR, Andrew Heaney had a career-high 14 strikeouts without a walk over eight innings and the Angels beat the Rangers 5-1 in the first game of a day-night doubleheader Tuesday in Arlington, Texas. Trout lined a two-run shot into the left field seats immediately after David Fletcher led off the game with a single off Joe Palumbo (0-2). It was Trout’s 10th HR this year against the Rangers, matching the most ever by an opponent against them in the same season. The doubleheader opener was the makeup of the July 1 game that was postponed after pitcher Tyler Skaggs was found dead in his hotel room the last time the Angels played in Texas. Heaney (3-3), who was one of the Skaggs’ best friends, allowed consecutive one-out singles in the first. The lefty then retired 16 batters in a row until Willie Calhoun’s two-out HR in the sixth.
Orioles: Hanser Alberto hit a tiebreaking three-run HR in the eighth, and the Orioles ended an eightgame losing streak by beating the Royals 4-1 in Baltimore. Hunter Harvey (1-0) worked a perfect eighth to earn his first major league win.
Extra innings: The Mets placed RHP Robert Gsellman on the 10-day IL retroactive to Aug. 14 with a partially torn lat that puts the rest of his season in jeopardy. Gsellman, 26, is 2-3 with a 4.66 ERA and one save in 52 relief appearances . ... The Braves placed RHP Jacob Webb on the 60-day IL with an ailing right elbow and likely will miss the rest of the season. Webb, 26, was 4-0 with two saves and a 1.39 ERA in 36 relief appearances. But he hadn’t pitched in the big leagues since going on the 10-day IL with an elbow impingement July 13 . ... The Dodgers activated INFs Enrique Hernandez and Chris Taylor off the IL. Hernandez began the season as the starting second baseman and was batting .238 with 16 HRs before injuring his left hand July 24. Taylor spent the last five weeks recovering from a fractured left forearm. He was hitting .261 with eight HRs . ... Authorities in the Dominican Republic arrested former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel and cited former INF Luis Castillo for alleged links to a drugtrafficking and moneylaundering ring. Dominican officials said the U.S. agencies participated in the investigation. Dotel, 45, held the record for playing on the most MLB teams (13) before it was broken this year by pitcher Edwin Jackson. Dotel was a member of the 2011 Cardinals team that won the World Series. Castillo, 43, was a three-time All-Star, won three Gold Gloves and was a member of the 2003 Marlins team that won the World Series.
