An early feast

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL early going but was able to turn the tide in the second half and score an 82-66 victory.

Sophomores Anthony Brown (21 points) and Ven-Allen Lubin (17, 10 rebounds) led the Warriors.

Shakur Poteat, a senior transfer from Edgewater, scored 31 points for Jones.

Bradley Douglas led a 20-9 region runner-up Eustis team in scoring at 17.6 points per game last season.

But he’ll need to score even more as a senior this season for a team that returned nobody else with much in the way of varsity experience. The 6-2 guard showed he’s up to the challenge.

Douglas poured in 36 points and the Panthers rallied from a double-digit third quarter deficit to win 75-72 against Timber Creek. He was 4 of 7 on 3-point shot attempts.

“His relentless pursuit to win is even higher this year,” said first-year Eustis coach Wesley Green, a former Panthers great and DePaul University player. “He brings the rest of the team with him.”

Douglas said his mission is not to carry his team. He just wants to lead it.

“I just have to work with them, stay positive, and get everybody involved,” he said.

Edgewater, without senior standout Michael Eads and with three starters making their first varsity appearance, pulled out a 61-58 victory against Lake Brantley in doubleovertime.

Navuan Peterson, a 6-5 senior, scored 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting for Edgewater and teammate

Amari Butler made four free throws in the final 1:17 to keep the Eagles on top.

Windermere got 18-point performances from two of its stellar junior guards, Trey Moss and E.J. Yorke, and cruised to an 84-37 victory vs. Mount Dora in the opening game of the day.

The Wolverines, coming off a 27-5 final four season, scored 64 first-half points and made 53.3 percent of their shot attempts for the game. Moss and Yorke were a combined 16 of 22 from the field in about a half of play each.

Drew Thelwell, in his first official game for The Master’s Academy, scored 16 points to lead a balanced effort in a 64-44 win vs. Wekiva.

Thelwell, a 6-3 guard, was Orangewood Christian’s top player as a junior.

After a Thanksgiving Day break, MVFC play continues Friday and Saturday.
