Destination for bowl still in flux
Until then, here is a look at some of the projections by the national media outlets as of Tuesday:
The Orlando Sentinel’s Brant Parsons has UCF (9-3, 6-2 AAC) taking a road trip to South Florida, with the Knights facing Kent State (6-6, 5-3 MAC) in the Boca Raton Bowl on Dec. 21.
It would be a familiar setting for the Knights, who played in FAU Stadium against the Owls on Sept. 7. It would be the fifth time UCF and Kent State have faced off, but the first time since 2004.
ESPN’s projections have UCF heading to two different destinations, with Kyle Bonagura predicting the Knights will wind up in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La., on Dec. 26 against Miami (6-6, 4-4 ACC). But Mark Schlabach has UCF heading down I-4 to take on FIU (6-6, 3-5 CUSA) in the Gasparilla Bowl in Tampa. UCF is 0-2 alltime against the Hurricanes, but 4-2 against the Panthers.
CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm has UCF spending the holidays at home, with the Knights facing Georgia State (7-5, 4-4 Sun Belt) in the Cure Bowl at Exploria Stadium in Orlando on Dec. 21. It would be the second time the program has played in this game, but the first since 2016.
Sports Illustrated’s Michael Shapiro sees UCF traveling to Texas to take on Georgia State in the Frisco Bowl on Dec. 20. It would be UCF’s first trip to the game in a Dallas suburb and the Knights’ first meeting with the Panthers, who play in the Sun Belt Conference.
The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel has UCF traveling to Charlotte for an appearance in the Belk Bowl against Virginia Tech (8-4, 5-3 ACC) on Dec. 31. It would be the first time the Knights have played in the Belk and their fourth meeting with the Hokies, but their first since 2003.
