Dr. Phillips High School head foot­ball coach Rod­ney Wells was awarded two tick­ets to the Su­per Bowl from the NFL on Thurs­day. The ges­ture is part of the NFL Su­per Bowl Ticket Give­away Pro­gram, which dis­trib­utes 500 tick­ets through­out the sea­son to groups of fans con­sist­ing of vet­er­ans, youth and high school foot­ball in­struc­tors, and oth­ers in cel­e­bra­tion of the league’s 100th year. “We’re not go­ing to Dis­ney­land; we’re go­ing to the Su­per Bowl,” Wells said with en­thu­si­asm as he clutched a com­mem­o­ra­tive foot­ball.

Wells of­fered no clues as to who will join him in Mi­ami.

“I told my brother and my fa­ther and my wife that they’ve got to start bid­ding right now,” Wells said with a laugh. “I don’t know who I’m go­ing to take.”

A 1997 DP grad, Wells grew up root­ing for Ron­nie Lott, Roger Craig and Joe Mon­tana dur­ing their run with the San Fran­cisco 49ers in the late 1980s and early 1990s. But he’d love to see the 49ers play­ing at sea­son’s end for a com­pletely dif­fer­ent rea­son.
