Sharks fire DeBoer amid los­ing streak

The Sharks fired coach Peter DeBoer on Wed­nes­day, ac­cord­ing to re­ports.

The 51-year-old DeBoer was fired a day af­ter the Sharks’ 3-1 road loss to the Preda­tors.

The Sharks are 0-4-1 in their last five games and 15-16-2 over­all.

DeBoer was 198-129-4 in parts of five sea­sons with the Sharks, lead­ing the team to the Stan­ley Cup Fi­nal in his first sea­son in 2015-16. He also has coached the Devils and Pan­thers.

DeBoer is the fifth NHL coach to lose his job this sea­son and the third for per­for­mance rea­sons. The Devils let go John Hynes and the Maples Leafs fired Mike Bab­cock af­ter rough starts, while the Flames’ ac­cepted Bill Peters’ res­ig­na­tion fol­low­ing al­le­ga­tions of abuse in pre­vi­ous or­ga­ni­za­tions and the Stars dis­missed Jim Mont­gomery on Tues­day cit­ing “un­pro­fes­sional con­duct.”

La­pointe has can­cer: The Cana­di­ens an­nounced that Hall of Fame de­fense­man Guy La­pointe was di­ag­nosed with oral can­cer.

La­pointe, 71, who cur­rently works as an am­a­teur scout for the Wild, will be­gin treat­ment in the com­ing weeks. The can­cer is lo­cated at the base of his tongue.

This form has a high cure rate, the Cana­di­ens said in the state­ment.

La­pointe won six Stan­ley Cups in the 1970s with the Cana­di­ens and was in­ducted into the Hall of Fame in 1993.
