Sharks fire DeBoer amid losing streak
The Sharks fired coach Peter DeBoer on Wednesday, according to reports.
The 51-year-old DeBoer was fired a day after the Sharks’ 3-1 road loss to the Predators.
The Sharks are 0-4-1 in their last five games and 15-16-2 overall.
DeBoer was 198-129-4 in parts of five seasons with the Sharks, leading the team to the Stanley Cup Final in his first season in 2015-16. He also has coached the Devils and Panthers.
DeBoer is the fifth NHL coach to lose his job this season and the third for performance reasons. The Devils let go John Hynes and the Maples Leafs fired Mike Babcock after rough starts, while the Flames’ accepted Bill Peters’ resignation following allegations of abuse in previous organizations and the Stars dismissed Jim Montgomery on Tuesday citing “unprofessional conduct.”
Lapointe has cancer: The Canadiens announced that Hall of Fame defenseman Guy Lapointe was diagnosed with oral cancer.
Lapointe, 71, who currently works as an amateur scout for the Wild, will begin treatment in the coming weeks. The cancer is located at the base of his tongue.
This form has a high cure rate, the Canadiens said in the statement.
Lapointe won six Stanley Cups in the 1970s with the Canadiens and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1993.
