A fourth person was arrested this week in connection with a home invasion robbery during which two people were shot — one in the head — in east Orange County last month.

Jeremy Smith, 30, is facing charges of attempted first degree murder, home invasion robbery with a firearm and aggravated battery with a firearm in a Nov. 30 home invasion on Barksdale Drive.

His arrest comes more than two weeks after three others, including his brother, were taken into custody on the same charges. Sarah Amanda Johnston, 44, Quavces Jones, 25, and Mark Churchill Smith, 34, remain held at the Orange County Jail following their Dec. 1 arrests.

Deputies were called about 5 p.m. to the home on Barksdale Drive, where they found two people injured: Arbey CarballoSantiago had been shot in his abdomen and Margarito LopezHernandez had been shot in the head.

Authorities in an affidavit said about 14 men had been living in the home, and “[i]t was known that the males inside the residence kept large quantities of cash,” Detective Kevin O’Malley wrote. They all worked for the same construction company and moved there from a house in Pine Hills.

In an interview with deputies, one man who was in the house during the invasion said he recognized Johnston that night, and gave deputies her phone number.

When authorities went to the address listed for her, Johnston, Jones and Mark Smith were inside.

In an interview with deputies, Johnston said she drove with the men to the home that night, but claimed she stayed outside while Jones, Mark Smith and Jeremy Smith were inside the house, holding the occupants at gunpoint. She said she heard gunshots, but didn’t know who fired. She later led deputies to the place where Jones hid the gun he used during the incident: a laundry basket.

Mark Smith told deputies in an interview he didn’t know what

Jones had planned when they arrived at the house. When Jones “all of a sudden” pulled out a gun as they walked up, he grabbed his gun too, he told deputies. He admitted to holding two men at gunpoint on a back patio, according to the affidavit.

When Jones entered the house, he started shooting, Mark Smith said. He told deputies he didn’t know if Jones’ bullets struck anyone.

He said his brother, Jeremy Smith, also had a gun during the invasion.

In an interview with deputies, Jones said the bullets he fired into the house were “warning shots,” telling deputies “sometimes you just have to let them [know] what’s up,” according to the affidavit. He described the incident as a “robbery gone wrong” and showed “no remorse” for the shooting, O’Malley wrote.

Deputies said the suspects stole a cellphone and that “multiple rounds were fired” by Jeremy Smith and Jones.
