Buffett endorses legal pot in state

Orlando Sentinel - - LOCAL & STATE - By Mark Skoneki

He plays with The Coral Reefer Band, so it should be no surprise that singer Jimmy Buffett on Friday endorsed Make It Legal Florida, a campaign to legalize recreational marijuana in Florida in 2020.

In a video, Buffett holds a petition being circulated through the mail by the group, and says, “Hello, Florida, it’s Jimmy here. Pot, weed, marijuana, cannabis — whatever you call it, it’s good medicine. Make it legal.”

Make it Legal Florida has reached more than 190,000 verified signatures and “is currently awaiting the verification of hundreds of thousands more from supervisors of elections around the state,” according to a news release it issued Friday.

To make the ballot, initiative gathers must gather 766,200 signatures by Feb. 1.

From there, the amendment’s language must be approved by the state Supreme Court, and it would need 60% of the vote to become law.

Make It Legal is backed by two of the biggest medical marijuana companies, MedMen and Parallel, formerly Surterra. Its petition would allow established companies to distribute recreational pot as they do medical pot.
